Dicle Bridge

The Dicle Bridge is a ten-arched 525 foot long black basalt bridge located over a mile downstream of the city.  It was originally built in 483-484 during the Roman period.  According to local legend, the bridge was originally built by ancient Israelites trained by Hiram Abiff.  In 742-743 it was destroyed by flooding and later rebuilt by Umayyad Hisham bin Abdul Malik, and in 974 the bridge was destroyed by an attack by the Byzantines.  It was finally reconstructed by 1065 under the reigns of the Marwanids Nasr ad-Dawla and Nizam ad-Dawla Nasr. The east half was rebuilt again later, probably in 1875.
